Guide
Convert MIDI and MusicXML files to guitar tab
Have a song only as MIDI or as a piano score and want to play it on guitar? You don't have to work out every string and fret yourself: ShedTab picks a playable fingering and makes the tab.
How the fingering is chosen
- It prefers small hand movements, low positions and chords that don't stretch the hand too far.
- Open strings are slightly preferred when they work.
- Notes a guitar can't play (out of range, too many at once) are left out, and you're told how many.
What you can choose
- Track: if the MIDI has several instruments, pick which one to convert (a guitar track is picked first).
- Tuning: Standard, Eb (half step down), D standard, Drop D, Drop C, Open G, DADGAD
- Capo: none to the 7th fret
Good to know
- MIDI timing is snapped to sixteenth notes and overlapping notes become one part; triplets are rounded to the nearest beat.
- MusicXML that already has tab opens as it is; fingering is only worked out when there is no tab.
How to
- Add the file: upload a .mid/.midi or .musicxml/.mxl file on the home page.
- Choose options: pick the track, tuning and capo in the box that appears.
- Start practicing: it turns into tab and plays right away.
- Adjust: download .gp and change any fingering you'd play differently in the studio.
Questions
- Does it work with piano scores? Yes. For MusicXML without tab, fingering is worked out from the pitches. A guitar can't play everything two piano hands do, so some notes may be left out.
- Is the file uploaded? No. Conversion happens in your browser.
