Guide
Turn your fingerstyle recording into tab
If you have a fingerstyle arrangement you want written down, start by recording it. With bass and melody together, fingerstyle tends to convert fairly well.
When recording
- Put your phone about 30 cm from the soundhole and record in a quiet room.
- Listen to a metronome on headphones while you play so the timing is steady. Just keep the click out of the recording.
- A second or two of silence at the start is fine. It stays in the tab as rests.
Tidying the draft
- Check the tempo and timing first. If beats drift, typing the tempo and converting again is quicker than fixing bar by bar.
- Then add missing notes and delete wrong ones. Low bass notes sometimes come out an octave high.
- Finally move notes to strings that suit your hand and add hammer-ons and slides.
Steps
- Record: play the piece once to a metronome.
- Convert: upload the file on the home page, set tuning, capo and tempo, and press Start practicing.
- Tidy up: download the .gp and fix it in the studio.
- Keep it: save it to your library or save it as a PDF to print.
Questions
- I played in an open tuning Pick DADGAD or open G under Tuning and the fingering uses that tuning.
- I played with a capo Set the capo fret and the tab is written relative to the capo.
