A free Songsterr alternative for slow-down and looping
· Eitri
Viewing tabs on Songsterr is free, but slow-down and looping come with Plus ($9.99/month). If you have the Guitar Pro file or PDF tab for the song, you can practice the same way in ShedTab for free.
What's free
- Slow-down: down to 25%, and the pitch stays the same.
- Looping: pick the bars you keep missing and loop them, with a count-in before each pass.
- Mute and solo: mute the guitar and play along with the backing, or hear the guitar on its own.
- Speed trainer: raises the tempo a little on every pass.
- Progress per bar: saves the tempo you played each bar cleanly three times in a row, so you can see how well you know the song.
How to start
- Open the file: drop a .gp or .gp5 file on the Guitar Pro viewer. Open PDF or text tabs from the home page.
- Pick a section: drag across the bars you want to practice to loop them.
- Slow it down: to a tempo you can play without mistakes, usually 50 to 70%.
- Speed up gradually: raise it 5% once it's clean, or turn on the speed trainer to do it for you.
Good to know
ShedTab isn't a tab library, so you need the file for the song yourself. If all you have is a recording, see how to turn a recording into a tab draft.
Questions
- Can I bring songs over from Songsterr? No. ShedTab isn't a tab library, so you need your own Guitar Pro file or PDF tab for the song. Plain-text tabs can be pasted in.
- Is it really free? Yes. Slow-down, looping, muting or soloing tracks and the speed trainer are free, with up to 20 songs in your library.
- Does it work on a phone? Yes. It opens in phone and tablet browsers with nothing to install.
